Loose Livestock

6:57 PM, 3 February 2010
Temperature: 44 F, sporadic rain

Woke at 8. Took care of livestock; rabbits were in need of water. Attempted to train rabbits to use water bottles through the application of peanut butter to the nozzles, but without success so far. Only Minnow has shown signs of even being interested in the peanut butter.

In the early afternoon we found and collected our first goose egg; it was apparently laid right in the open, leaning up against one of the feeder trays. Sort of like having your baby in the middle of the highway; apparently these geese aren't particularly careful parents. We collected it and gave them a bit of food to convince them that our taking their eggs is something they like, and took it inside.

We have a guest from out of town right now; after showing her around, we returned to find one of the sheep had escaped from her pen. In the process of getting her back in, half a dozen ducks escaped and have refused to be rounded up despite all attempts. We've decided to allow them to stay out for the night - they won't go far from the pond, and the mud makes trying to chase them precarious right now.

One of the barn cats escaped into the rest of the workshop while fetching a bottle of batch #10. We'll have to coax them back in with food either tonight or in the morning.
